A review article is not just a summary of other people’s research, but rather an analytical piece that presents and discusses the scientific findings on a specific topic, and suggests new insights or future directions.
What is a review article?
It is a type of scientific article that aims to:
– Organize published knowledge on a specific topic.
– Analyze and compare the results of previous research.
– Highlight research gaps.
– Propose new directions for research.
These articles are often in demand and sought after, as they save the reader the trouble of having to read dozens of original papers.
The difference between a research article and a reference article :
– Original research article : Presents new experimental or theoretical results, and follows the structure of IMRaD.
– Review article : It does not present new data, but rather draws on published research, reorganizing and critically analyzing it.
When do you write a review article?
– When you have sufficient experience or extensive knowledge on a specific topic.
– If you notice inconsistencies or lack of research on a specific issue.
– As part of your preparation for a research project or scientific dissertation.
Steps to write a review article :
1- Define the topic precisely : It should be specific enough to cover it in depth, not too general.
2- Literature collection : using reliable databases.
3- Content analysis : linking, comparing, and critiquing research.
4- Organize the paper around a central idea or research question .
5- Formulating results and proposals .
Review article structure:
Introduction : Introducing the topic, its importance, and the gap the paper fills.
– Middle sections : according to chronological, methodological or thematic classification.
– Analysis and discussion : presenting trends, contradictions, and gaps.
– Conclusion : General results and future visions.
Tip : A review essay should have a clear “story” and a logical context that leads the reader from the beginning of the topic to a useful conclusion.
Examples of suitable topics for review articles :
– Comparison of techniques used to solve a particular problem.
– The development of a scientific concept over time.
– Critical analysis of research on a specific phenomenon.
